Schema Interpretation: An Aid to the Schema Analysis in Federated Database Design
نویسندگان
چکیده
A new method for schema analysis is described in which reasoning is based upon the real–world semantics of schema elements. The method distinguishes between intrinsic and in–context semantics, which respectively provide a basis for shallow and deep semantic comparisons between element. Real–world semantics are represent as element interpretations which map elements into a pre–defined common concept model. The method provides a basis for more accurate integration of component schemas within a federated database system.

Problems in the Maintenance of a Federated Database Schema
In this paper, we characterize the problem of maintenance of a federated schema to cope with local schema evolution in a tightled coupled federation. By means of an example, we present the problems that local schema changes could cause on the federated schema and show proposed solutions.
متن کاملA UML/OCL Framework for Design of Mediated Data Federations
This paper describes a general semantic framework for precise specification of so-called mediating systems; such systems provide for tight coupling on a global level of a collection of heterogeneous component databases to a federated database. A mediating system maps in a uniform and systematic manner the underlying database schemas of the component systems to a separate, newly defined integrat...
متن کاملConsidering Integrity Constraints During Federated Database Design
Correct transformations and integrations of schemata within the process of federated database design have to encompass existing local integrity constraints. Most of the proposed methods for schema transformation and integration do not sufficiently consider explicit integrity constraints. In this paper we present an approach to deal with integrity constraints. Our approach bases on the idea to r...
متن کاملSchema coordination in federated database management: a comparison with schema integration
We introduced a new approach, termed schema coordination, as an alternative to the well-known schema integration approach for processing cooperative queries in federated database systems. The schema coordination approach is based on the attribute correspondence matrix that links similar attributes in all component databases. In this paper, we compare the schema coordination approach with the sc...
متن کاملIntegrity Constraints in Federated Database Design 1
In this paper we demonstrate the application of a methodology for federated database design. Federated database design includes the transformation of heterogeneous local schemata from the native data models of the component database systems into a common data model, the integration of these homogenized schemata into the federated schema, and the derivation of external schemata for global applic...
